5 Things I Can’t Wait to do with My Kids Once I Get Home from Afghanistan
*Feature

 1. Tuck ‘Em In (So I Can Get To Business With Mom)

Speaking of exercise, there has been ONE exercise I have not been able to do since I’ve been gone. This is in spite of the time I’ve been available to work out in the gym here on the camp (gently less time than I’ve had to play HALO, as it turns out – see #3). The problem is that I need the right training partner.

So you can bet I’m pretty excited to wrap up that first day home with the kiddos. It’s going to be awesome, but it’s going to be REALLY awesome once the kids are wiped out, cleaned up, read to (I dunno, Tolkien? – see reason #5), and TUCKED IN!!!

That’s when I can finally take off my combat boots, and switch out my Army green combat socks…for my business socks. Because you know once I’ve got my business socks on, it’s business time. That’s why they’re called business socks!

Yeah, it’s like that! See you soon, my wonderful family!

Justin is married and has two sons plus one daughter. He spent his childhood locked in a room with his NES and his AD&D manuals, when he wasn't out chasing chickens. He spends a great deal of time now trying to sound smarter than he really is.

Welcome home, from a fellow dad (but no soldier) in Canada. Great post.

Thanks, Kenny. I’m not home yet, but as you can see I’ve got big plans!

Where do you live in Candada? I lived in the North Country in NY for some time, near Kingston and Cornwall. It was there that I was treated to the Canadian national treasure called “poutine,” and don’t think for a moment I don’t miss it every day!

Glad you enjoyed the article. Thanks for the comment!

Justin, great list and I can’t imagine what it’s like to be away from your family for so long.

Thank you for your service and keeping us safe
(while we complain about bullshit like people glitching in MW3 and traffic in the morning).

Can’t wait to hear an update on #2-#5 and I hope you are carrying your +5 battle axe when in the field.

Let’s be fair: people glitching in MW3 is a serious dang issue! I feel you on that one for sure! :)

What a great post for Memorial Day! Thanks for keeping us safe, Justin…and almost more importantly, for re-enacting Top Gun scenes – not in the air, but on those sweet Saudi beach volleyball courts.

Well, they were more like pebbly Afghan courts with Jordanians, but I was definitely keeping it steamy. Steamy….and also gangster.

    Hey Justin,
Good to see you are soon to return. Great post as all of the things about the kids growing up are too true. Culture shock for Dads when they come home.

It’s a culture shock I can’t wait to experience, though!
